James Polk

Primary instruments, keyboards/piano/organ.  Also plays reeds, bass, drums,etc....Strong writer/arranger.  Mid 50's.  Not born in Austin, but came here as a young man to pursue music.  Came to Huston-Tillotson in the 1950's just for the music program.  One of the key figures in the late 50's-through the 1970's.  Organized bands at the time that the music scene was heading to the West Side.  Known in players circles for his knowledge of the technical aspect of the music,  i.e., theory, composition, etc... Was one of the people responsible for forming  integrated bands which included young white players from UT/West Side.  Moved out of Austin to take a job with the Ray Charles Orchestra.  Relocated to West Coast, toured and recorded internationally.  Came back to Austin in the late 80's.  Is very concerned with jazz/blues/Black music preservation.  Has definite ideas about how to revitalize Black youth culture.  Will probably eventually open an academy for the performing arts/music.  Is now finishing a terminal degree in music so that he will be able to teach.  Primary because, like Martin, James has experienced the life of a career musician in the major leagues.  Has insight from his experience in Austin, but can speak on larger issues because of his experience.  is very unhappy with the state of Black music community in Austin.  Outspoken, articulate, very willing to openly offer  views.  Has no problems with conflict or controversy.
